Experiential Design

MGM Cotai

To celebrate the grand opening of the MGM Cotai, Macau’s newest casino resort, Obscura was selected to develop an immersive content program for it’s centerpiece,
The Spectacle at the MGM Cotai. A column-free architectural marvel, spanning the length of a soccer field and surrounded by massive living green walls combined with high resolution LED screens.

In collaboration with then MGM Cotai CEO Grant Bowie, Obscura Digital conceived the highly successful
Windows of the World. A 360 degree (30K x 12K pixel space) bespoke content program that encompassed video shoots from around the world, extended photography techniques, and custom interactive software utilizing mobile devices and real-time sensors.

To begin, extensive user research was performed along with spatial analysis and technical audits to ensure proper functionality and translation of our experiential content

Primary sightlines were cross referenced with user flows, resulting in some minor adjustments to screen placements and the decision to conform all media surfaces to a 4mm pixel pitch.

Of utmost importance however, was making sure that our content program was respectful and sensitive to local traditions and cultural customs.

Content capture teams along with drone operators were sent out to capture Unesco World Heritage sites both in China and around the world.

In house, technical teams engineered and fabricated custom water tank miniatures, exactly replicating the screen topography of The Spectacle.

In parallel, our interactive software teams developed real-time generative art applications that outputted beautiful fractal tessellations comprised from cameras placed strategically throughout the interior spaces within The Spectacle.

A shared social gaming mobile application was also developed for MGM Cotai’s M-Life account holders to play across the Spectacles LED screens and earn guest reward points.

Ultimately, Windows of the World brought the world to China and China to the world in the form of 6 different media modes, each populated with a multitude of plug and play content modules.
