YouTube Symphony

The YouTube Symphony Orchestra is a global endeavor devoted to sharing the love of music and celebrating humanity's vast creative diversity.

Musicians from around the world were selected to perform in the orchestra via YouTube auditions, and invited to Sydney, Australia, where they worked with world-renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and received coaching by leading musicians from top orchestras.

The Grand Finale performance featured architectural projections both inside the hall, for concert goers attending the event, and outside on the great sails of the Sydney Opera House for the city’s residents to join in and watch the historical performance.

The show’s program, comprised 22 classical and modern excerpts, showcasing works by Bach, Mozart, Berlioz, Britten, Stravinsky, Ginastera, Strauss, Schubert, and others.

Working closely with MTT, an extensive shot-list of visual and interactive treatments was developed. Each visual treatment was designed to correspond to thematic motifs and linked to notational cues within the scores.

Since the performance was a live show without any guiding tracks, our show ops, camera technicians, and interactive teams were required to perform in tandem with the orchestra. This coordination was facilitated through show calls directed over comms from an Obscura team member following the score.

A quarter mile away across the Quay, our exterior production crew projected a live IMAG video feed of the interior performance using long throw lenses custom made for the Olympics. Our team included interactive performers who added real-time visuals to integrate the live feed onto the Opera House’s sails in an artful and dynamic manner.

The Grand Finale performance, which was live streamed to millions around the world, dramatically concluded with Stravinsky’s Firebird, where beautiful pre-rendered media was composited in real time with audio reactive visualizers.

The concert broke records for highest viewed live streams and number of tweets to date. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event for the musicians on stage, our crew, and audiences around the world.
